Directions to cerro Calan using public transport / taxis
Cerro Calan is located close to the most eastern station of the red metro line (line 1), called “Los Dominicos”. From this station, it is either a 40 minute walk (uphill, see the figure on the bottom of this page) or a 5 minute taxi ride (USD $ 3-4) to get to the observatory. Transport with taxi’s is cheap in Santiago, and for those people staying either in the IBIS hotel or Hotel Neruda it is probably by far the easiest to share a taxi.
Below we list some approximate travel times from Hotel Neruda, IBIS Manquehue and the Guesthouse. Taxi prizes are calculated using http://www.taximetro.cl/, public transport times have been calculated using google maps. Keep in mind that you will be traveling up to Calan during rush hour, so the times and prizes quoted are likely to be lower limits.
From Hotel Neruda: A taxi to Calan costs about USD 11, and takes ± 15 minutes (both assuming no traffic). Taking public transport to the los dominicos metro station will take ± 20 minutes and USD 1, with afterwards either a 40 minutes walk or a USD 3-4 taxi ride to make it up to cerro Calan.
From Hotel IBIS Manquehue Norte: A taxi to Calan costs about USD 7.5, and takes ± 9 minutes (both assuming no traffic). Taking public transport to the los dominicos metro station will take ± 5 minutes (2 stops) and USD 1, with afterwards either a 40 minutes walk or a USD 3-4 taxi ride to make it up to cerro Calan.
From the Guest House: Taking a taxi from the guest house to Calan will cost you about USD 3 – 4, and take 5 minutes. Walking will take you ±30 minutes.
Notes on getting a taxi
Flagging down a taxi at the street from your hotel will be no problem. Doing this from the guest house or at the end of the day from cerro Calan might be a bit more problematic. To solve this you can either order a taxi via http://www.radiotaxilascondes.cl/, or order one online either through a web interface (link here) or with a downloadable app (easy taxi, link here). To get down the hill you can also always ask someone of the LOC to order you a taxi.
To get a taxi from the metro station “Los Dominicos”, follow the walking directions for getting to cerro Calan from the metro for a few minutes until you pass a large bus stop and afterwards traffic lights. continue walking after the light for ±50 meters to find a good place to flag down a taxi.
