Near-infrared Imaging polarimetry of HD 142527

Research done by Dr. Héctor Cánovas, potdoctoral investigador of the Physics and Astronomy Department of the Universidad de Valparaíso, has been published on the cover page of Astronomy and Astrophysics (A&A) journal. This research involves several members of the Nucleo Milenio “Protoplanetary disks during ALMA early Science”.


In the article highlighted by A&A, titled “Near-Infrared imaging polarimetry of HD 142527”, the authors applied imaging polarimetry to derive the properties of the dust on the surface of the protoplanetary disk HD 142527 and to directly image three spiral arms on the disk (one of them detected for the first time). These results are specially interesting since the disk around HD 142527 is a strong planet-forming candidate. The observations presented on the article were obtained with the NaCo instrument at the VLT Telescope.
